City Locksmiths History
City Locksmiths was founded in 1959 by Rae Mortimer under the name The City Locksmith. Rae owned and operated the business for approximately 45 years and was a true pioneer in the New Zealand locksmith industry.
The business began in Forte Street, in Auckland’s CBD and in 1981Rae became one of the founding members of the Master Locksmiths Association of Australasia (MLAA) when it was established in NZ. The MLAA set strict security standards to uphold the integrity of locksmithing practices.
Rae also played a key role in introducing master keying systems to New Zealand, which remain the foundation of modern key systems today.
City Locksmiths later relocated to Newmarket, where it operated at 309 Broadway which is now the site of Westfield Mall.
During this time, David Ferguson, a well-respected expert in the door hardware industry, took over the business. Under his leadership, City Locksmiths continued to expand, serving residential and commercial clients while also supplying other locksmiths.
Like Rae, David was instrumental in advancing the industry, driving innovation and improvement throughout his 16 years of ownership.
The latest chapter in City Locksmiths’ legacy began with Matt Hockly, who took over the business after working in various industrial and commercial sectors, bringing a strong background in security and systems.
